digital era

This website uses the term “the digital era” when referring to the time after which digital photography became the dominant way of making photographs.

Thus on this website, “the digital era” in photography refers to “the 21st century and beyond.”

(The 19th and 20th centuries are called “the film era” on this website even though film wasn’t used in the earliest part of that span.)

This website points out that digital technology was being used on photographs a couple of decades before the turn of the year 2000 — just as some photographers were integrating digital technology into their workflow in the 1990s — but “digital” did not become “the dominant way of making photographs” until the early years of the 21st century.
