“It’s about seeing

The determination of “what makes for a trustworthy photograph” will always be tied to human seeing, regardless of which technological advances come and go.

This tie is reflected throughout TTG, all the way from P1 of the Trust Test to the consistent importance placed on “what the camera lens saw,” wherein the camera lens acts as a surrogate for the human eye.*

*Obviously one of the challenges of making compelling photographs is accounting for the countless ways that cameras see differently from how the human eye sees.

For example, the human eye can simultaneously see a wider range of bright areas and dark areas than most cameras can depict in a single-exposure photograph, while cameras can freeze motion much better than the human eye can.

Every respected information provider in the world accounts for these differences, just as TTG does throughout this website.
